Winged Sprintcar night at the Speedway

Winged Sprintcar night at the Speedway
Tense moments during qualifying

By Brian Calkins
For Meridian Speedway

MERIDIAN, Idaho - At ASA Member track, Meridian Speedway

There were a few tense moments at ASA member track, Meridian Speedway, during qualifying when Dave Quick, Weiser, Idaho, lost control on his second qualifying lap, bounced off the turn two wall and flipped into the pits ending up in the safety lane. No one else was injured and Quick was transported to the hospital for observation but returned to the track later in the evening to visit with fans and survey the damage on his sprint car. The rest of the night’s racing went smoothly with few cautions and great racing by all of the classes.

The 35 lap Winged Sprint main started with Steve Freeman on the pole but Matt Elliott took the lead on the outside. Cody Veenstra and Chris Rattarree worked up to second and third to put the pressure on the leader. Rattarree took second on the outside and closed in on Elliott but fell back for several laps. Rattarree made an attempt to the outside and looked inside but got loose with 5 to go and could not make up the distance. Elliot took the win with Rattarree, Veenstra, Jim Todd and Sierra Jackson following.

In the Thunder stock main event Tommy White took the lead and held on for the entire 20 laps and took the checkered followed by Jim Anderson and Bill Lacy.

The Legends took the checkered for the 30 lap main event with Jason Tilden on the pole and Brandon Frasier on the outside. After the first lap Tilden and Frasier crossed the start finish line side by side but Tilden spun bringing out the first caution. At the restart Ron Hayes took the lead but gave it up to Connor Elliott a few laps later. Another caution involving three cars sent Ryan Byrd from Sandy Utah to the pits with suspension damage. At the restart Tom Matheson worked his way inside but lost the lead when the yellow flag came out and the field reverted to the last completed lap. Travis Anderson picked off Elliott and sent him back to third behind Ben Matheson. Anderson survived several more restarts and drove away from the rest of the field to take the win followed by Ben Matheson, Darin Turpin, Camron Madsen and Josh Allen.

The Non Winged Sprints 30 lap main started with Doyle Hartman and Brittany Poedy sharing the front row. Poedy took the lead and left the rest of the field behind until the first caution just before the halfway point. At the restart Johnny Giesler took second and put the pressure on Poedy and eventually passed on the outside for the lead. Giesler ran away from the field and finished almost a half lap ahead of the second place Wyatt King. Poedy, Doyle Hartman and Phyllip Zubizareta rounded out the top five.

When the Super Stocks got the green flag for their 30 lap main event Bryan McDaniels held off the field for the first nine laps. Phyllip Zubizareta worked his way from an eighth place start to put the pressure on the leader on the outside and then took the lead with 20 laps to go. The rest of the racing was for lesser postions but a late caution bunched up the field but Zubizareta won the race followed by Troy Evans, Gale Carter, Dennis Brodigan and Rick Baldwin.

Chris McClure brought the field of Street Stocks to the green flag and stayed in front for several laps until Chad Bess took over. At the halfway point Bess still led the race with Jaramie Fuss and Steve Bosselman spread out behind. The father daughter team of Marv Weaver and Melissa Scott rounded out the top five. Bess got jammed by lap traffic and Fuss took the lead with five to go and held on to the lead to take the checkered followed by Bess, Bosselman, Weaver and Scott.

Racing action heats up next Saturday with the Napa Auto Parts Bottle Rocket 150 and the fireworks show presented by the City of Meridian. The Bottle Rocket 150 features the Rocky Mountain Challenge Series Late Models. The ASA Modifieds, the Non Wing Sprints, the Mini Stocks and the Hornets will also be on the race card. Admission is $15 for adults gates open at 4, time trials at 5 and the racing gets underway at 6:30.
