Thrills of competition linger as Meridian takes week off
By Jon Brown
MERIDIAN, Idaho -- Racers are taking the weekend off at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway, but that could be just the thing needed for both competitors and fans to catch their breath.
Meridian Dairy Days is being held at the speedway complex this week.
Although rain has hampered the season thus far, there are still some red-hot points races shaping up on the quarter-mile paved oval on Main Street.
On June 27, the action returns with Winged Sprints taking the track for the first time since the two-day Diamond Cup. Cory Lockwood holds a three-point lead over fellow Nampa, Idaho, driver Chris Ratterree. It's the closest race out of the 13 class championships on the line this year at the 58-year-old racetrack.
Two Meridian racers are battling for the top spot in the Non-winged Sprints standings, with Johnny Giesler eight points in front of teenager Wyatt King.
The Street Stocks division will have a new points leader when drivers take to the track for qualifying next week. Kuna, Idaho's Jaramie Fuss pushed ahead to the top past a veteran with his victory on May 30. Fuss now holds a 14-point lead over Nampa's Marv Weaver.
Terry Lydell of Mountain Home, Idaho, leads the Super Stocks division, which also will be featured next week.
The Legends and Thunder Dogs round out the card next week.

As an American Speed Association-sanctioned track, Douglas County Speedway is part of the ASA Member Track National Championship for the Modified division.
The goal of the ASA Short Track National Championship is to activate a measuring system that takes into account many variables, such as field size, inversion, wins and number of races in a season, and create a level playing field to determine who is the ‘best-of-the-best’ of the ASA Member Track Champions Nationwide.
The ASA Joe Gibbs Driven National Member Track Champion Award was designed to give the National Champion exposure with one of the top teams in racing — Joe Gibbs Racing. Joe Gibbs Driven Oil, a division of Joe Gibbs Racing, sells the actual oil products developed and used by Joe Gibbs Racing to racers at all levels. More information can be found at www.joegibbsdriven.com.
The ASA Member Track program is comprised of a network of short tracks around the United States, as well as a variety of regional and national touring series. For news and information from all the racetracks and tours involved in the American Speed Association, visit www.ASA-Racing.com.
